A potentially exciting welterweight scrap is reportedly headed for July 6’s massive UFC 239. According to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, sources have confirmed that Diego Sanchez will meet Michael Chiesa on the pay-per-view.
Helwani reported the fight was in the infant stages of being booked last week.
Fan favorite Sanchez has seen somewhat of a late-career resurgence as of late. He’s won his last two fights in a row after losing three of his previous four. ‘The Nightmare’ outlasted Craig White by decision at UFC 228 before demolishing Mickey Gall at March’s UFC 235.
He’ll have no easy task in Chiesa, the touted grappler who recently moved up to 170 pounds. ‘Maverick’ submitted Carlos Condit at last December’s UFC 232. It was his first win since 2016. The move potentially proved that ditching the draining cut to lightweight has worked wonders for his career.
The fight is an interesting booking in that it pits two The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) winners against one another. Sanchez won TUF 1 while Chiesa won TUF 15.
When the fight is made official, it will mark a huge night of fights for JacksonWink MMA at UFC 239. Their flagship member Jon Jones will take on Thiago Santos for the light heavyweight title in the main event. Meanwhile, Holly Holm will meet Amanda Nunes for the women’s bantamweight championship in the co-main event.
UFC 239 goes down on July 6, 2019, from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
