Donald Cerrone trolls Reebok, praises Nike gear

UFC lightweight Donald Cerrone has seemingly made another jab at the Reebok deal with a picture of him wearing Nike clothing and praising its various styles and colors.

A few weeks ago, veteran lightweight contender Donald Cerrone was fined by the UFC for violating the Reebok’s outfitting policy at last month’s UFC on FOX 17. According to Cerrone, the violation was for sewing an unauthorized patch, which pays homage to his grandmother, onto his fight trunks.

As you would expect from Cerrone, he’s not backed off on this issue at all. After news of his fine went public, he told fans on Twitter that he would continue to take the fines and wear his patch. Today on his Instagram page, Cerrone posted a picture of himself sporting and promoting Nike clothing, and it’s written in a way that suggests it’s a jab at Reebok’s uniform quality.

Sure love the way my @nike shoes and shorts fit! So many different styles & color options!!… https://t.co/kWgxk57YNh

Cerrone’s thoughts on Reebok have been well-documented, dating back to a May interview, when he said that while he believed the deal was “awesome”, he was probably “going to be losing $60,000 a fight.” A few months later, he told Inside MMA that the Reebok deal was “definitely hurting everybody”:

“That’s a touchy subject. If I say something, you will see ‘Cowboy’ fighting in Bellator next week,” Cerrone said on Inside MMA. “Yeah, the Reebok deal is definitely hurting everybody. All the big corporate sponsors I have are sticking with me, thank god… This is my first fight with the Reebok deal and all my sponsors said they’re sticking by so we’ll see. I’m proud to sit right here and enjoy a full bodied Budweiser.”

Most recently, in an interview with The MMA Hour, Cerrone told Ariel Helwani that the UFC wouldn’t let him fight again if the committed the same violation.

“And then the part that really upset me is that they said if I do it again, I won’t be able to fight again,” he told Ariel Helwani. “So, that kind of buckled me.

“We’ll see. I mean, I plan on wearing it again. If they want to fine me, I’m going to wear it again. We’ll see.”

“Cowboy” is scheduled to fight Tim Means in a welterweight main event at UFC Fight Night in Pittsburgh on February 21st.
