Former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (23-3) will complete his current fight contract with the Chicago based promotion when he steps back into the cage this October, leaving him a free agent afterwards.
Alvarez spoke to MMAFighting.com, confirming with them that he would fight on October 15 in Canada at Caesars Windsor Hotel & Casino in Windsor, Ontario. An opponent for that match is expected to be named soon.
Once Alvarez contract is complete, he will be able to entertain contracts from rival promotions but ultimately, Bellator will have the opportunity to match any offers.
In his last fight, Alvarez was able to earn some redemption versus Shinya Aoki this past April in their rematch at Bellator 66. Their first meeting took place in December 2008 with Aoki winning by first round submission. This time, Alvarez would be the one to end things with a TKO finish at 2:14 of the first.
Alvarez joined Bellator in 2009, debuting in the very first Bellator show by winning a submission victory over Greg Loughran in the first ever Bellator lightweight tournament. He would then go on to capture the inaugural Bellator lightweight strap in June 2009 by submitting Toby Imada. He went on to defend the title once and eventually lost to current title holder Michael Chandler last November at Bellator 58.
