Eddie Alvarez vs. Conor McGregor official for UFC 205

The fight we’ve been waiting for is finally official for UFC 205 in New York City: Eddie Alvarez vs. Conor McGregor for the lightweight championship.

After weeks of rumblings, Eddie Alvarez vs. Conor McGregor is finally official.

The two UFC champions will square off in a highly anticipated lightweight title fight in the main event of November’s UFC 205, the promotion’s debut in New York. UFC president Dana White confirmed the news on SportsCenter late Monday night, following an initial report from @TalkMMA.

Interestingly, it was reported on “UFC Tonight” last week that Alvarez would likely fight Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 206 in December, and that McGregor would likely not be part of UFC 205 due to an injury.

Alvarez won the lightweight belt with a first-round knockout of Rafael dos Anjos this past summer. The ex-Bellator champ is currently 3-1 in the UFC, with other victories over Anthony Pettis and Gilbert Melendez and a loss to Donald Cerrone in his 2014 debut.

After being shocked by Nate Diaz in March, McGregor rebounded in a rematch against the Stockton, Calif., native with a unanimous decision win in the headliner of UFC 202 last month. The Irishman won the 145-pound belt by knocking out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds late last year.

McGregor will have the chance to become the first fighter to hold two belts at the same time in UFC history, as he will not be stripped of his featherweight strap before the 155-pound title fight against Alvarez.

UFC 205 takes place live from Madison Square Garden in New York City on Nov. 12. Also booked for the card is a welterweight title bout between champ Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson.
