Sounds like Frankie Edgar may be putting that drop to bantamweight on hold, as the former UFC lightweight champion has been named “frontrunner” to replace Brian Ortega against Chan Sung Jung in the UFC Busan main event later this month in South Korea.
Ortega tore his ACL and was forced to withdraw.
“Frankie Edgar is the frontrunner to replace Brian Ortega versus Chan Sung Jung on Dec. 21, sources say,” according to ESPN reporter Ariel Helwani. “Looking good. Yes, he’s scheduled to fight Cory Sandhagen next month, but UFC is hoping to keep the fight intact, too. They would have to assess after the South Korea fight.”
Edgar (23-7-1) set sail for 135 pounds after failing to dethrone Max Holloway at UFC 240 and despite the promotion’s optimism, I find it hard to believe “The Answer” would be able to hold on to his Sandhagen bout in Raleigh on Jan. 25, win or lose, unless he’s able to defeat “Korean Zombie” by flash knockout in the opening frame.
