Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, who now competes in the bantamweight division after failing to win the title at 145 pounds, turns 40 in October and hopes to finish up his hall-of-fame career with one last run at UFC gold.
Shutting down the unranked Sean O’Malley would be a good place to start.
“I know a lot of people are tied up right now,” Edgar told MMA Island. “O’Malley just fought, won, pretty dominant fight. He can definitely be a matchup I see happening, maybe before this year ends. A lot of people have fights coming up so if he’s free, I’m free, makes sense to me.”
Edgar is currently ranked No. 7 at 135 pounds.
It’s been a rough couple cf years for the declining Edgar (24-9-1), who stands at 1-1 in his new division after getting flattened by Cory Sandhagen. Especially when compared to the back-to-back knockout wins the 14-1 O’Malley scored in 2021, which includes last weekend’s beatdown of Kris Moutinho.
“Sugar” fans have been campaigning to get the former “Contender Series” standout a spot in the Top 15 and a knockout victory over Edgar would certainly be a means to that end … unless “The Answer” goes back to his wrestling roots and grinds his way to victory.
