After suffering the first stoppage loss of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career to Brian Ortega — via first round knockout at UFC 222 this past March (see it) — Frankie Edgar got back on the winning track just five weeks later by edging out Cub Swanson at UFC Atlantic City.
Now, “The Answer” is ready to pick up where he left off, which is at the front of the title hunt, as he declared during a recent edition of The MMA Hour. Edgar wants to face the winner of the upcoming Featherweight title fight between division champion Max Holloway and the aforementioned Ortega.
“Yeah, I’m down with that. I still think I’m the guy. I risked that shot, and maybe I shouldn’t have like people said, but I am going to do it every single time,” he added. “I still believe I can win that fight. I was doing well in that fight. Obviously I got caught and he did a good job of finishing. I want the winner, man. I think I deserve it. I am number three. We’ll see what happens, man, we will see what happens. I think I’m the guy.”
Ortega and Holloway are set to duke it out in the co-main event of UFC 226 on July 7, 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Facing either man will provide a chance to check off “to-do” on Edgar’s list, as he has the opportunity to get some revenge on “T-City” should they get matched up again.
On the flip side, a showdown against Holloway will give him the match he’s desired for months after their two previous potential scraps were cancelled due to injury. We’re headed toward Khabib vs Ferguson territory here.
“Everything’s got to work out the right way. I did my part last Saturday. That’s why I jumped in quick because I wanted to be back knocking on this door and here I am knocking on this door and I think I’m the guy.”
As for who he prefers to fight should he get the nod, he really has no preference.
Do you?
