Fight fans will have to wait a few extra days to see Frankie Edgar make his Bantamweight debut, as his fight against Pedro Munhoz — which was originally set to go down in “prelim” action at UFC 251 on July 11 — has been pulled from the card.
No fret, it will take place four days later and still on “Fight Island,” as it will now co-headline UFC Fight Night 172, which is set for July 15, 2020 in Abu Dhabi. That’s according to MMA Fighting, who brought word of the switch earlier today (Tues., June 16, 2020).
It’s a pretty good move, actually, as UFC 251 has a stacked card already, and instead of burying Edgar vs Munhoz on the “prelims,” having it co-headline a ESPN+-streamed event a few days later seems a bit more appropriate.
Edgar was originally set to make his drop down to 135 pounds last year against Cory Sandhagen, but was ultimately stalled after “The Answer” was removed from the fight to face Chan Sung Jung at Featherweight, instead. The end result saw Edgar suffer the second knockout loss of his combat career.
Munhoz, meanwhile, is looking to get back on track after having his three-fight win streak snapped by Aljamain Sterling a year ago.
UFC Fight Night 172 is set to feature a banger of a Featherweight bout, as Dan Ige will face Calvin Kattar in a battle of surging contenders looking to make the next jump into UFC stardom.
