Family: Matt Hughes ‘has no broken bones or internal injuries’ following truck-train collision

The sister of UFC legend Matt Hughes provides an update on his condition following a train accident on Friday.

Two days ago, former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes was hospitalized after his truck collided with a train in the small town of Raymond, Illinois. The latest update on Hughes has come from his sister, Beth Ulrici, who published this statement on behalf of the Hughes family.

Our family is overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support.

Please understand that there are many false reports out there by people who say they are close to the family. We will post another update here when we have more news.

Matt is stable and has no broken bones or internal injuries. He has some minor lacerations and bruising and is currently being weaned from his ventilator. He is not yet awake and not responding as we would like to see but we see the fight in him.

Matts strength and determination along with God’s Mercy and Grace will bring him through this.

We ask that you all continue to pray.

An earlier press release by Illinois State Police wrote that Hughes’ truck crossed the tracks “directly in front of a train and the train struck the passenger side of the truck.” UFC president Dana White initially had told ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto that Hughes had suffered an apparent head injury.

The 43-year-old had recently been mulling a return to MMA competition, having last fought to a TKO loss against Josh Koscheck in September 2011. Hughes was most recently employed as the UFC’s Vice President of Athlete Development and Government Relations before he was let go late last year.
