“It’s being talked about and it sounds like a lot of interest is in it right now.”
Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. initially got the ball rolling on their Aug. 26, 2017 boxing match with some back-and-forth banter on social media. And, after another round of trash talk between the two combat sports stars, some are beginning to question whether ‘The Notorious’ and ‘The Best Ever’ are trying to generate interest in a rematch.
Speaking to Helen Yee in a recent interview, Floyd Mayweather Sr. believes his son’s recent spat with McGregor is an indication that both men are interested in booking MayMac 2.
”It’s sounding like him and Conor McGregor are going to fight,” Mayweather Sr. said, per MMA Mania’s Ryan Harkness. “That’s what it sounds like. I don’t know for sure, but I’m just saying the way things are sounding to me. It sounds like [Floyd’s] going to fight again, and Conor McGregor, he wants to fight again. Even though he don’t want to fight again, but he’ll fight again just to show his people what he can do – which is nothing.”
Their first fight at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena was one of the highest grossing combat sports events of all time and, despite an avalanche of criticism from boxing and MMA purists, many fans walked away feeling like they’d got their money’s worth.
Mayweather stopped McGregor with a barrage of strikes in the 10th round, and Floyd Sr. believes ‘Money’ would win the rematch even more convincingly.
”This time here, I’m gonna make sure that he gets stretched out,” Floyd Sr. said. “All the way out of the game. I want to make sure he don’t come back no more.”
Sr. believes it’s unlikely that the rematch would take place under MMA rules, claiming that there’s more ‘interest’ in seeing Mayweather and McGregor lock horns in the boxing ring.
”I’m just saying, I think they’re gonna fight the same way,” he said. “I think Conor McGregor wants that win back that he had, which is never coming back to him anyways. It’s being talked about and it sounds like a lot of interest is in it right now.”
McGregor may very well be eager to avenge his loss to Mayweather, but the former two-division UFC champion currently has his hands full with Khabib Nurmagomedov, who he will challenge for the lightweight title at UFC 229. The blockbuster pay-per-view takes place next month, Oct. 6 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
