Former Invicta fighter Sarah Patterson passes away

Sarah Patterson, a former lightweight champion, has passed away.

Women’s MMA veteran Sarah Patterson has passed away. The one-time Invicta FC fighter was just 36 years old.

News of Patterson’s passing comes via her fight team Fighter Alias, who released a tribute to Patterson yesterday on Facebook.

“We are deeply saddened upon learning the passing yesterday of our friend and fighter, Team Fighter Alias’s Sarah Patterson,” read the message. “Sarah had an amazing spirit and was such a kind-hearted person. We were proud and honored to sponsor her at Invicta Fighting Championships 32! Sarah, you will be deeply missed.”

Invicta FC also paid tribute to Patterson, writing on twitter “We are saddened by the passing of former Invicta athlete Sarah Patterson. Our thoughts go out to her friends and family.”

Patterson’s last fight was at 2018’s Invicta FC 32. There she faced future Invicta title contender Kaitlin Young. Patterson, who lived in Cedar Rapids, IA, began her pro MMA career on the Iowa Regional circuit in 2002.

In 2015 she appeared under the Dynasty Combat Sports banner, where she defeated Kate Bloomfield by rear naked choke. Patterson won her next three fights, finishing Erica Grover (strikes) and Kilistina Makihele (strikes) in the SteelFight Fight Night promotion and Tamikka Brents (rear naked choke) at Gateway Fighting Series 8.

Her win over Brents won Patterson the GFS Lightweight Championship.

In 2017 Patterson fought for DCS a second time, dropping a decision to Jozette Cotton. Her penultimate contest was against Moriel Charneski at Revolution Combat Championships, also in 2017.

Patterson—who fought at middleweight and lightweight—had a career record of 5-5.
