UFC heavyweight Frank Mir is the latest fighter to be flagged for a possible USADA violation, which stemmed from drug test taken the day of his eventual knockout loss to Mark Hunt.
In the main event of UFC Brisbane, Frank Mir became the latest heavyweight to (literally) fall victim to a walk-off KO loss to the one and only Mark Hunt. Mir had no complaints about the stoppage, which dropped him to 2-6 in his last 8 fights, and it’s quite possible that it’ll be awhile (if ever) before we see Mir back inside the Octagon.
On Friday, the UFC released this statement on Mir’s potential USADA violation.
“The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Frank Mir of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an in-competition sample collected the day of his fight on March 20, 2016 in Brisbane, Australia.
USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case involving Mir. It is important to note that, under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full and fair legal process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed.
Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.”
There’s no word yet on the substance Mir (18-11) tested positive for. The punishment for a first-time offense is 2 years, which lightweight veteran Gleison Tibau recently accepted after he failed both in and out-of-competition drug tests.
Mir was scheduled to work as a studio analyst for Fox Sports 1’s coverage of UFC Fight Night: Dos Santos vs. Rothwell on Sunday, but now that will no longer be happening.
