Frankie Edgar: I don’t see how Cub Swanson is in consideration for a title shot

Frankie Edgar believe he should be the only one in the conversation about who the next 145-pound title contender would be.

After a huge win over Jose Aldo in front of an opposing frenzied crowd, Max Holloway now holds the undisputed UFC world featherweight title. Rightfully, he is now a walking target for the division’s top contenders.

One of them is Frankie Edgar, who is coming off a big victory of his own against Yair Rodriguez at UFC 211, notching his second straight win. On Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, “The Answer” made a case for himself as to why he should be the only one in consideration for a title shot, and questioned why fellow top contender Cub Swanson is even in the conversation.

“There is no one else. C’mon,” Edgar said (via MMA Fighting). “There’s no one that makes sense more than me, no one that’s done what I’ve done to get it.”

“I don’t see how he’s in consideration, you know?” Edgar said of Swanson. “Since me and Cub fought, I’ve fought nothing but top-ten, top-five guys. I don’t think he’s fought anyone in the top 10 and he’s also lost a match since then. So I don’t think how that’s even, you can’t even compare the two.”

If Aldo ended up winning, a third fight with Edgar would likely be out of the question since he already holds two victories over the former lightweight champion. But since it was Holloway who emerged victorious, Edgar is happy that the best case scenario for him ended up happening.

“I knew that was the best case for me. I just wasn’t going to sit there and shout it out and try to cheer for anybody, I just figured I won’t say much about it, I’ll let those guys figure it out, and the cards fell in my favor. So, here we go, let’s set up Holloway-Edgar.”

Edgar has also been entertained with the idea of dropping down to bantamweight at 135 pounds. He is not exactly opposed to it, but he is also not too keen on making it happen.

“I don’t even know if I want to go down to ‘35, it would have to be the exact right opportunity. If it’s for the belt, maybe,” Edgar said. “I could make the weight, but every time I get down to ‘45 I’m like I don’t want to lose 10 more pounds. And I don’t even cut that much weight.”
