MMA: UFC 205-Weidman vs Romero

Yoel Romero will look to finally reach the top of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight mountain, as “Soldier of God” will battle current division kingpin, Israel Adesanya, in the main event of UFC 248 on March 7, 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It’s a title fight the hulking Cuban received despite coming of back-to-back defeats, though you can thank Paulo Costa’s injury for that.

Nevertheless, there was a time when Romero was seemingly an unstoppable force, plowing right through the 185-pound division, all while leaving behind a trail of bodies including former champions and top contenders such as Lyoto Machida, Ronaldo Souza and Luke Rockhold.

One of his more impressive victories during an eight-fight win streak he was ownded came against former middleweight champion, Chris Weidman. The two men squared up back at the stacked UFC 205 pay-per-view (PPV) event in 2016.

For the first couple of rounds, Weidman was able to neutralize Romero’s explosiveness thanks to his wrestling, though “Soldier of God” showed that his grappling is also world-class.

But just a few seconds into round three, Romero timed Weidman’s takedown attempt perfectly, and proceeded to connect with a flying knee right on “All American’s” dome, sending him crashing to the canvas leaking like a faucet. From there, Romero pounded on his foe until Mario Yamasaki stepped in to put an end to the punishment.

Now, Romero will look for another highlight reel finish as he looks to hand Adesanya his first-ever loss in mixed martial arts (MMA).
