Valentina Shevchenko will make a quick turnaround after knocking out Jessica Eye this past June (see it) to defend her Flyweight title against Liz Carmouche in the main event of UFC Fight Night 156 this Saturday (Aug. 10, 2019) in Montevideo, Uruguay.
Before then, let’s take a look back at the night “Bullet” tasted Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) gold for the first time.
Back in December of 2018, Shevchenko found herself staring down former women’s Strawweight champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, in the co-main event of UFC 231. Letting the fight play out on the feet, it was pretty much all Valentina, though Joanna did have a few shining moments.
At the end of the day, however, Valentina proved to be a bit more technical, even showing off her grappling skills by slamming Joanna to the ground on more than one occasion. Once there, “Bullet” showed her strength by refusing to give up top position.
The win gave her victory number four over Jedrzejczyk, having defeated her three times before in Muay Thai competition. Six months later, Valentina secured her first-ever title defense with a vicious head kick knockout over Jessica Eye.
Now, “Bullet” will look to get revenge on Carmouche, who defeated the champ way back in 2010 on the regional circuit.
