Alexander Volkanovski will look to defend his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight title against Max Holloway at UFC 251 on July 11, 2020 in the first-ever event to go down on “Fight Island,” which is located on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. Before then, let’s take a look back at the night “The Great” tasted UFC gold for the first time by dethroning, you guessed it, Max Holloway.
The two men threw down in the co-main event of UFC 245 last December. Up until then, Holloway had already defended his title three times, while Volkanovski had reeled off 17 straight wins, including winning all seven of his UFC bouts. After five rounds of back-and-forth action between the two talented 145-pounbders, Volkanovski had done enough to earn a unanimous decision win, ending “Blessed’s” longtime reign atop the 145-pound mountain.
Though not a controversial decision, the promotion opted to give Holloway an immediate rematch given his work over in the division over the previous three years. That sets up an interesting scenario should Max win, as the promotion could feel obligated to set up an immediate trilogy bout to afford “The Great” the same opportunity given to Max.
