A rematch between Fury and Wilder may not be in the immediate future, but that’s not stopping Tyson Fury from declaring himself the better boxer.
On Saturday night Deontay Wilder defended his WBC heavyweight belt for the ninth time against mandatory challenger Dominic Breazeale, finishing the fight in the first with a massive highlight reel knockout. You can watch that from a dozen different angles here, but at this point you’ve probably seen them all and are just wondering what’s next for the “Bronze Bomber.”
Specifically, is Tyson Fury or Anthony Joshua next?
Joshua holds the IBF, WBA, and WBO heavyweight belts, and a fight with Wilder would unify the heavyweight titles. Fury may not have any belts at the moment, but that’s only because he had to vacate his WBA, WBO and IBO titles in 2016 amidst massive depression and drug addiction issues. He staged a comeback in 2018 and ended the year with a fight against Wilder that ended in a controversial but pretty appropriate draw.
An immediate rematch was supposed to go down, but Fury signed an exclusive deal with ESPN while Wilder is with Showtime. Similar politics are keeping the Joshua fight from coming together as well.
That hasn’t stopped Fury from continuing to comment on Deontay Wilder’s fights. The “Gypsy King” released a video following Wilder’s Saturday night knockout in New York, and while he kept the tone positive and fun he made it clear he considered himself the real winner of their original fight.
“This is Tyson Fury, AKA the ‘Gypsy King,’” Fury said. “I just want to say well done to Deontay Wilder in knocking out Dominic Breazeale. I got that prediction quite correct. Anybody who wants to go toe to toe with Deontay Wilder will have the same fate as Dominic Breazeale and the rest of his 40 other victims.”
”Anthony Joshua, you’ll get it as well,” Fury continued. “Same thing will happen to you. Dillian Whyte as well. The ‘Bronze Bomber’ is the most fearsome, most destructive puncher in the heavyweight division. But it’s just a pity that he had to lose to the Gypsy King. Anyone that stands in front of Deontay Wilder, he will knock them out. Deontay Wilder is the second baddest man on the planet behind the Gypsy King Tyson Fury, the number one heavyweight in the world. Nobody can beat me. I can’t be touched.”
Can’t be touched, hmmm?
Never forget the same dangerous hands Wilder annihilated Breazeale with, he couldn’t keep Tyson Fury down. The Lineal world champion and undefeated Gypsy King, we need a rematch…. #WilderBreazeale #Fury #Boxing pic.twitter.com/ZbKeoM7u4L

With so much money on the table, it’s possible something could be worked out to allow Wilder and Fury to fight. But Wilder isn’t holding his breath. Fury is set to face Tom Schwarz in June, while Showtime is already angling to have Wilder rematch Luis Ortiz sometime later this year.
