It sounds like the “Teammate vs. Teammate” fight between Ian Garry vs. Vicente Luque has resulted in “The Future” being pushed out of the renowned fight camp.
Ian Garry is set to face fellow Kill Cliff FC member, Vicente Luque, at UFC 296, which takes place next weekend (Sat., Dec. 16, 2023) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. And the fallout from that booking may wreck what was a good thing for “The Future” out in South Florida.
Garry was recently kicked out of Team Renegade in the United Kingdom, reportedly on the orders of UFC Welterweight champion, Leon Edwards. He’s also been forced to organize his camp for the upcoming “Sin City” showdown outside of Kill Cliff because that’s where Luque is training.
According to Luque, Garry may not return to the facility because of some relatively mild social media comments leading up to their fight.
“There is certain things that we find disrespectful,” Luque told Middle Easy in a new interview. “I’m sure that a lot of guys did not appreciate the comment he did in my Instagram, I myself, I did feel that’s a disrespect. I’m not going to take it personally, but I did feel like I was doing something that was really important for me. I posted about it and he chose to make fun or whatever out of it, you know?
“I’m sure that many guys look at that and say he was a teammate from us and now he’s fighting against one of us, and now he just decides to change his attitude,” Luque continued. “So, I think that bothers a lot of people. But with that said, I don’t know, maybe at the end when everything’s said and done, he can work a way to go back into the team and train.”
Comments from other Kill Cliff members (read them here) have pointed toward Garry being on the outs … and Luque confirmed it.
“With time, if Ian wants to get back to the team, eventually maybe,” Luque said. “Maybe he can get back. But, right now, I’m the guy on the team, so everybody has my back. I really appreciate that. It’s good to be part of a time like Kill Cliff like I’ve been for so long. We’ve had different names in all these years, but still the same crew. To have all these guys supporting me, it’s really positive.”
Garry has delighted in generating negative attention for his opponents to deal with in past fights. But, this time, it’s Garry who is getting roasted from all sides after a segment of the fan population has turned against him.
Luque says that’s, “live by the sword, die by the sword”-type stuff.
“I know that Ian is a guy that is really, you know, he’s outspoken,” Luque explained. “He speaks about people. The whole Neil Magny thing went to another level, you know, to another proportion. So, at the same time, I’m like, okay, when you talk, you’ve got to be willing to listen as well, you know? I feel like that’s going on a little bit. He created a lot of hate toward Neil Magny, and now maybe he’s getting a lot of hate toward him.”
This situation right here is why so many fighters don’t like getting booked against guys in their own gym. Lines get drawn and crossed, feelings get hurt over the smallest provocation. And then one of the fighters finds out their gym isn’t really their gym any more.
Will all this negatively affect Garry at UFC 296? It’d be hard for it not to, but we’ll find out how much on fight night.
