Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez will be staged at T-Mobile Arena

The September 16th mega-fight between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez is headed for Las Vegas, Nevada.

When Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) vs. Canelo Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) was officially announced last month, there was no venue confirmed for this titanic clash between two of the top boxers in the world. While potential suitors included AT&T Stadium in Texas, Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, and Madison Square Garden in New York, the final landing spot is (rather predictably) the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“For the best fight on the best date in boxing, there is no better venue than the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas,” Oscar De La Hoya said (via an official Golden Boy press release). “Fans won’t only be treated to a classic battle between the two best boxers in the sport, they will also be able to enjoy an incredible week of activities marking Mexican Independence Day. This will be a can’t-miss event for hardcore and casual fans, alike.”

Believe it or not, this will be Golovkin’s Las Vegas debut. All but one of his fights in the United States has been held in either New York or Southern California, where he resides and trains. Canelo has been a fixture in Sin City for five years, but the Mexican has also headlined three stadiums shows in three different Texas cities.

Alvarez’s unanimous decision win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in May drew over a million PPV buys, as well as a crowd of 20,510 at T-Mobile Arena. The live gate of $10,631,850 came up about $115,000 short of exceeding the venue’s top mark set by UFC 200, but the event was certainly just as disappointing as 200 was.

Golovkin vs. Alvarez is set for September 16th and will air live on HBO pay-per-view. At stake will be Golovkin’s three major middleweight (160 lbs) titles, as Canelo seeks to end the undefeated record of the Kazakh powerhouse.
