Gennady Golovkin was ahead on none of the scorecards prior to TKOing Kell Brook

At the time of Gennady Golovkin’s 5th round stoppage win vs. Kell Brook, none of the three judges at ringside scored the fight in his favor.

A peak at the scorecards is not usually something required for a Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) fight, as he hasn’t gone to a decision since an eight-round fight in June 2008. While GGG got the 5th round corner stoppage win over Kell Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) in last Saturday’s highly entertaining HBO Boxing main event in London, it was a very competitive bout between the reigning #1 middleweight and the IBF welterweight champion. In the post-fight interview, promoter Eddie Hearn said that Brook was winning on the scorecards, which certainly came as a surprise.

We now know (through Hearn) how the three judges saw the fight after four rounds, and while Brook wasn’t actually winning, nobody had GGG ahead 1/3rd of the way through the contest.

Of course, had round 5 not been stopped by Brook’s corner, Golovkin would’ve surely taken the round, and thus gone up 48-47 on two scorecards, with a 48-47 for Brook. Two judges giving round 1 to Brook, which saw him badly hurt to the body and nearly knocked down in the opening minute, was pure lunacy. Benoit Roussell’s 39-37 Brook scorecard is definitely … questionable. I don’t see any particular issue with 38-38 (giving round 2 clearly to Brook, and then the closer 4th round to Brook), but Guido Cavalleri getting there by scoring round 1 for the Brit is another puzzler.

Dominic Ingle threw in the towel after a sustained attack continued to damage what was later found out to be a broken eye socket. The decision was met by heavy boos from the partisan crowd, who created a cauldron of noise with every punch landed by Brook.

I guess you could say that Gennady Golovkin, as is his modus operandi, “didn’t leave it in the hands of the judges.”

Highlights from the fight can be seen in the video below.
