Georges St-Pierre opens as betting favorite over Michael Bisping

A betting line is already out on the recently-announced title bout between Georges St-Pierre and Michael Bisping, and GSP is the early favorite.

Longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is finally going to return to the Octagon in 2017, and his first test will be middleweight champion Michael Bisping. The bout was made official by the UFC earlier today, though it hasn’t been placed on a particular card as of yet.

Like most high-profiled bouts that get announced, a betting line for the fight usually soon follows and this case is no different. In a bit of a surprise though, the guy that’s giving up some size and hasn’t fought in three-plus years has still opened up as a slight favorite (via BestFightOdds):

Georges St-Pierre vs Michael Bisping odds - BestFightOdds

As you probably know by now, BestFightOdds takes a sample of all the odds from the biggest books and offers the best price available for each fighter above. Looking at the individual lines, GSP is anywhere from -125 to -150, and you can get Bisping anywhere from -105 to +129 at the moment. While those aren’t massive differences, it does show that the different books are observing the fight in a slightly different light.

Frankly, I’m shocked that GSP is valued so highly in this bout. Bisping is much bigger, has been more active, and has great takedown defense. St-Pierre is a complete unknown in a higher weight class after the layoff. If you’re inclined to put money on Bisping, now would be the time.
