Gervonta Davis is facing possible jail time after a vehicle collision that happened last November.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Gervonta Davis has been indicted on 14 counts in connection with a hit-an-run that occurred in downtown Baltimore last November. Among the charges Davis is facing are failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving bodily harm and failure to render reasonable assistance to an injured person.
This incident happened on November 5 at around 1:50 a.m after Davis celebrated his 26th birthday at a club named Medusa. This was just a few days after Davis defeated Leo Santa Cruz to retain his WBA (Regular) lightweight title and win the WBA (Super) super featherweight title.
A police report, obtained by the Baltimore Sun, states that two people were travelling in a 2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV southbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard when the driver ran a red light and struck a 2004 Toyota Solara. The report said that the Solara’s airbags deployed and that the vehicle was ‘destroyed’ in the crash.
The Lamborghini then hit a fence, where it became ‘disabled’. The occupants of that car are accused of fleeing the scene on foot. The report states that Davis was later identified as the driver of that vehicle.
The Solara had four occupants, two women ages 18 and 19 and two males ages 20 and 18. All of them were transported to University of Maryland Medical Center.
An attorney for the driver has said that the driver suffered “fairly serious injuries” and has had complications in her recovery.
All the charges against Davis are misdemeanours. Had any of the victims sustained life threatening injuries some of those charges could have been felonies carrying the possibility of five years in prison. The most serious of Davis’ charges could land a sentence of up to a year in prison.
In February Davis was arrested in Florida after he was accused of assaulting his girlfriend. A trial in that case has been set for April. In 2018 Davis was arrested over an altercation in Washington, D.C. Davis is facing a civil lawsuit for assault and battery over that incident.
Davis has a 24-0 record (23 KOs) and is ranked as one of the best super featherweights and lightweights on the planet. He turned pro in 2013 and signed for Mayweather Promotions in 2015.
Davis won the IBF super featherweight title in 2017. That same year he fought in the co-main event of Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor. In 2018 Davis won the vacant WBA (Super) super featherweight title. A year later he won the vacant WBA (Regular) lightweight title.
Recently Davis has traded barbs with Ryan Garcia over a possible fight. However, Mike Coppinger reports that Davis is likely to face Mario Barrios next.
