World Series of Fighting (WSOF) isn’t the only mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion putting together fights this weekend, as our friends at GoFightLive.tv are set to stream several combat sports events from the regional scene all across the world over the next two days.
Once again, as a gift to MMAmania readers, GFL is offering 25% off any event, using the exclusive coupon code “ManiaGFL.”
This week’s selections provide the return of a UFC veteran, several title fights, a one-night Flyweight tournament, and a whole lot more. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the top five fights to watch on GFL this weekend.
5. Jerome Mickle vs. Robert Bodden – NYFE 10
Intriguing amateur Welterweights will look to earn gold for the first time at NYFE 10 this weekend on GFL.
Don’t let his 3-2 record fool you, as Jerome Mickle has the skills to put together a run on the regional circuit. The New York native is an all-action fighter, having never reached the judges’ scorecards in either victory or defeat.
Following two straight losses, Mickle bounced back in a major way in his last outing, punishing his last opponent into retirement by the end of the first round.
If Mickle wants to earn his fourth career victory and the NYFE Welterweight title, he’ll have to get through the dangerous Robert Bodden.
The six-foot Bodden tasted defeat for the first time in his career last September, losing a close split decision in Ring of Combat. The loss could prove to be a gift in disguise, as we so often see fighters grow immensely following a tough defeat inside the cage.
While it will likely be a while before either of these men earn a shot in the big leagues, a victory this weekend will undoubtedly be a huge feather in either man’s cap.
4. Juston Campos vs. Damon Minor – Spartyka Fight League 23
If you have never watched a Spartyka Fight League event, don’t miss this weekend’s main event between Juston Campos and Damon Minor.
These two amateur Lightweights are major prospects for a reason, and both have the tools to become legitimate talents in MMA.
Minor is currently the reigning Spartyka Fight League Lightweight kingpin, having won four straight fights in impressive fashion. In his last outing, Minor proved his toughness, earning his first ever title via decision in a 15 minute war.
For his first title defense, expect the Virginia native to be looking for his seventh career knockout.
As for Campos, the 6-2 Texan is hoping to string together back-to-back victories after going 2-2 in his last four.
Although he will be the major underdog on Saturday night, Campos’ knockout power could earn him his first MMA title.
3. Sam Creasey vs Paul Marin – Almighty Fighting Championships 1
Who doesn’t love MMA tournaments?
Almighty Fighting Championships is set to put on an epic one-night four-man Flyweight tournament, featuring some major prospects. In the end, the victor will be crowned the first ever 125-pound champ for AFC.
While both semi-final fights are worth watching, we simply can’t pass over Sam Creasey vs. Paul Marin.
Paul Marin is a grizzled veteran and knockout specialist, having finished seven opponents in sensational fashion. “El Empalador” has competed in the famed Cage Warriors promotion several times, and will now look to earn his first title by winning two fights in one evening.
Marin will have his hands full in the first round as he takes on rising prospect Sam Creasey. At 6-0, “The Hobbit” is a real menace inside the cage, as he is dangerous in all aspects of MMA.
With five straight finishes, you can expect Creasey to be looking for an early knockout in order to go into the second round of the tournament unscathed.
Regardless of who takes the victory, the fans will be the real winners by night’s end.
2. Steve Montgomery vs Avery McPhatter – Absolute Fighting Championship 25
Recently released UFC veteran Steve Montgomery returns to the Florida regional scene this weekend to battle Avery McPhatter in the co-main event of Absolute Fighting Championship 25.
Montgomery struggled in 2015, losing a short notice fight inside the Octagon, battling injuries, and ultimately getting cut by UFC brass following two straight losses.
Although “The Creepy Weasel” didn’t perform well in his two UFC appearances, there is no question he is Octagon worthy.
Of course, McPhatter will be looking to pull off the shocking upset at AFC 25, and with five straight victories via finish, Montgomery better not be overlooking his opponent.
Incredibly, “The Irish Hurricane” has shrugged off a dismal 3-6 start to his MMA career, reeling off six straight victories in just under two years.
A finish victory for either man could catapult them into the big leagues, so pay close attention to this matchup.
1. Billy Quarantillo vs Michael Quinones – Absolute Fighting Championship 25
The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) prospect Billy Quarantillo wants nothing more than a shot inside UFC’s Octagon, and a win over Michael Quinones at Absolute Fighting Championship 25 could very well be his golden ticket.
Quarantillo is 7-1 in his professional MMA career, most recently defeating fellow TUF product Marc Stevens at AFC 24 in late January.
Winner of five straight with four finishes, the Lightweight prospect will battle the extremely durable “El Capo.”
Quinones is a one-time Bellator veteran, losing to Brandon Girtz via decision back in 2012. Since then, the Florida resident has reeled off three straight victories all via finish.
With both men hungry to prove their worth, expect a sensational fight in the main event of AFC 25.
That’s a wrap fight fans! Now go support regional MMA!
