Both Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez were well under the 176 lbs weight limit for the WBC 30-day weight check ahead of their middleweight title fight rematch.
We are just one month away from the middleweight championship rematch between Gennady Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) and Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were, of course, supposed to rematch earlier this May, but Canelo’s failed drug test for clenbuterol postponed the matchup to September 15th.
A few years ago, the WBC mandated for title fights that weight checks be conducted at the 30-day and 7-day marks ahead of the actual bout. At 30 days, boxers cannot be 10% over the contracted limit, and they are forbidden from being 5% over at the 7-day weight check.
Unlike their first matchup, which ended in a controversial split draw, Alvarez is actually competing for the WBC belt this time, so he is participating in the mandatory weight checks, and came in at 167.4 lbs. As for Golovkin, his weight was recorded at 168.3 lbs.

Obviously both men are well under the 176 lbs mark, and essentially already at the 5% mark that you’d see for the 7-day weight check.
Last September, Golovkin came in at high 170 lbs, several pounds above his normal range since he began participating in WBC title defense weight checks. The last time Canelo participated in a 30-day weight check prior to the Golovkin rematch was for his May 2016 showdown with Amir Khan. Canelo weighed 163.8 lbs, although the fight was essentially at a 155 lbs catchweight, so this is his first conducted as a fully-fledged 160-pounder.
Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez 2 is for Golovkin’s WBA and WBC titles and takes place at the T-Mobile Arena, with HBO pay-per-view carrying the fight and other undercard action starting at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT.
