It appears that Strikeforce is trying to put together a women’s bout between fan favorite Gina Carano (7-1) and Amanda “Lioness of the Ring” Nunes (6-1) for this June.
Tatame.com spoke to Nunes manager Zé Mário, who confirmed current negotiations with the promotion to get the two women in the cage.
“We want her to fight more before fighting for the title, so we’ll fight Gina in June, who’s very respected in the US.”
Carano recently made an appearance at the Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva event last month announcing her return to the cage this June. The fighter had taken an extended absence, filming the upcoming movie “Haywire” which was directed by Steven Soderbergh and is due for release on April 22.
Carano is coming off a title loss to Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos for the Strikeforce Women’s Middleweight title in August of 2009. The defeat ended a seven fight unbeaten streak.
Nunes recently earned a 14 second knockout over opponent Julia Budd in January at a Strikeforce Challengers 13 event in Nashville, Tenn. The win marked her six straight victory and her first appearance in a Strikeforce cage.
No specific date for the fight was discussed but it’s very likely that Carano vs. Nunes will be part of the tentatively announced Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum event in Dallas, Texas. The event will take place on June 18 at the American Airlines Arena and will feature the other opening quarterfinal Grand Prix Tournament bouts between Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers.
