Canelo vs. Golovkin 2 just went down and everyone’s already chomping at the bit for part 3.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have spent the last year and a half of their boxing careers focused solely on each other, and if Golovkin’s coach Abel Sanchez has his way, “GGG” will extend that attention for another eight months.
While Canelo promoter Oscar de la Hoya is talking about a fight with David Lemieux for December, Sanchez wants Golovkin to take a breather so he’ll be ready for a potential trilogy fight in May of 2019.
“I would want him to rest now,” Sanchez told BoxingScene. “He’s had some good fights. He rests now and comes back to the gym at the beginning of the year, and they fight in May.”
“I think that, as a pair, they stand to do better than any fight that either one could ever have [against another opponent]. I think next May 5th would be a perfect date. I think it’s a strong possibility that if there’s another fight between them that it’s gonna happen May the 5th.”
After a controversial draw between the two in 2017 and an even more controversial scrapped Cinco de Mayo match earlier this year, Alvarez had his hand raised in a majority decision win Saturday night (see the highlights here). With all the past controversy, both fighters undoubtedly made tens of millions. More importantly, the fans walked away feeling pretty satisfied with the quality of the fight if not whose hand ended up being raised.
So you can sign us up for Canelo vs. Golovkin 3, although maybe somewhere other than Las Vegas so there’s less questions about the judging. All that will have to be worked out between Golovkin and Alvarez’s people before a trilogy can take place, so we wouldn’t mark your calendars just yet.
