Raulian Paiva, who lost via doctor’s stoppage at UFC Uruguay, showed off his wound on instagram.
On the prelim card of UFC on ESPN+ 14: Shevchenko vs. Carmouche 2, Raulian Paiva did battle with fellow DWTNCS Brazil alum Rogerio Bontorin.
The fight didn’t last long, though. After a few fun exchanges, both on the feet and on the ground, referee Osiris Maia broke up the action to inspect some damage on Paiva. Though it had gone unnoticed in the moment, Paiva had been sliced open by a thunderous knee to the head from Bontorin.
When Maia brought a doctor to check Paiva’s face, a decision to stop the fight was swiftly made. TV cameras only got a short glimpse of the cut, but that was enough to convince anyone watching that the fight should be stopped.
The gash over Paiva’s right eyebrow was reminiscent of some of the worst cuts seen in MMA (such as Marvin Eastman’s from a fight with Vitor Belfort). Because of the cut Bontorin was awarded the TKO victory.

Despite the vicious injury he sustained, Paiva captioned his post with a message saying he will be back “stronger”. In a separate post on Instagram Paiva said, “Thanks very much everyone. I’m sorry…”
Paiva’s wasn’t the only gruesome injury suffered at UFC Uruguay, ‘Platinum’ Mike Perry left the arena in Montevideo missing a nose, thanks to a knee from Vincente Luque.
