“It will be interesting to see how he’s gonna come back from it but I believe in Conor. I believe he is gonna come back from that”.
UFC 257: Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor 2 didn’t go the way Georges St-Pierre expected.
St-Pierre predicted McGregor to win but was surprised by how composed Poirier was on fight night — especially against a fighter of McGregor’s caliber.
‘The Diamond’ flattened ‘The Notorious’ with a flurry in the second round to earn the KO victory, but ‘Rush’ is confident McGregor will bounce back and return to the UFC a reinvented man.
“I thought Conor (McGregor) was going to win and I was wrong,” St-Pierre told Michael Bisping on a recent episode of Believe You Me (h/t Jordan Ellis of Low Kick MMA). “I was very surprised how Poirier keep his composure under the pressure because I think one of Conor’s strengths is that he overwhelms his opponents with his pressure, with his presence.
“Poirier stayed sharp. It was a real testament of how good he is,” GSP continued. “It was amazing and now it will be interesting to see how Conor can come back from it. I believe Conor can come back from that loss. He is the kind of fighter I believe, he fuel himself on confidence. When he is confident that’s how he performs at his best. He likes to act confident. Fake it until you make it and he plays a role that he is very confident.
“It will be interesting to see how he’s gonna come back from it but I believe in Conor. I believe he is gonna come back from that,” St-Pierre added. I believe he is going to overcome that obstacle.”
McGregor is already ‘harassing everybody’ about a rematch, according to SBG Ireland head John Kavanagh, and would like to complete a trilogy bout with Poirier before the summer. The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion had won the first round on all three judge’s scorecards but succumbed to Poirier’s leg kicks and pressure boxing in the second, suffering the first knockout loss of his professional career.
