Earlier today (Thurs. February 21, 2019) former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre announced his retirement.
During his press conference, however, “Rush” wouldn’t completely shut the door on a potential UFC return at some point down the line (via MMA Mania):
“I don’t know where I will be, mentally, the state of mind, in my life, in a few months,” St-Pierre said.
“I don’t know. For me, it’s retirement now. I don’t want those other guys to call me out, because I’m out. If something happens and Dana calls me back with something interesting, we’ll see. Like a movie scenario, ‘Oh! He’s coming back!’ We’ll see, but right now I’m not thinking about it.”
St-Pierre decided to hang up his gloves for good after being unable to land a super fight with UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. At this point in his fighting career, the Canadian mega-star was looking for high-profile fights. After he wasn’t able to get the one he wanted, he decided it was time to walk away for good.
“Rush” has solidified himself as one of the sport’s best of all time. He holds a record of 26-2 and ends his career on a 13-fight win streak. If St-Pierre were to ever come out of what is now his second retirement, it would certainly have to be for a huge fight.
