Welterweights Gunnar Nelson and Thiago Alves are headed to Denmark in September.
A pair of exciting welterweight scrappers are headed to Denmark in September. According to UFC Europe’s official Instagram profile, Gunnar Nelson will take on veteran and former title challenger Thiago Alves at UFC on ESPN+18, in the country’s capital of Copenhagen.
Both a jiu-jitsu and karate black belt, Gunnar Nelson (17-4-1) dropped a split decision to Leon Edwards in his last outing in March. Although ‘Gunni’ did finish Alex Oliveira in the fight prior to that one, in December 2018, he was also knocked out by Santiago Ponzinibbio, in July 2017. The 30-year-old hasn’t won two fights in a row since 2016 and early 2017, when he finished Albert Tumenov and Alan Jouban.
A 26-fight Octagon veteran, Thiago Alves (23-14) has seen better days in his UFC career. He has just one win in his last four outings, a split decision victory over Max Griffin in February. Sourrounding that, ‘Pitbull’ was bested by the likes of Curtis Millender, Alexey Kunchenko and most recently, Laureano Staropoli, in May.
UFC on ESPN+ 18 is scheduled for September 28th in the Royal Arena in Copenhagen. No other fights have been linked to the card as of yet.
