Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has assembled an interesting welterweight match up in the form of Gunnar Nelson vs. Thiago Alves, recently made official for the UFC on ESPN+ 18 mixed martial arts (MMA) event inside Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Nelson (17-4-1) was expected to become the next big thing at 170 pounds, thanks to his lethal blend of karate and jiu-jitsu, as well as his 4-0 start to his UFC career. Unfortunately, “Gunni” has been unable to keep that momentum going, mustering up a 4-4 record in the years that followed, including a split-decision loss to Leon Edwards last March.
Things haven’t fared much better for Alves (23-14), who fought then-champion Georges St-Pierre for the welterweight title back in summer 2009. Since then, the oft-injured (and sometimes lightweight) “Pitbull” is just 6-8, fresh off his decision loss to the unheralded Laureano Staropoli just last month.
No other bouts have been announced for UFC Copenhagen at this time; however, you can expect that to change in the coming weeks, if not days.
