Alexander Gustafsson is not too happy with with the recent announcement of Stipe Miocic vs. Daniel Cormier.
After Alexander Gustafsson’s five-round thrashing of Glover Teixeira at UFC Fight Night 109, ‘The Mauler’ thought that he had earned enough ammunition to challenge the winner of last Saturday’s light heavyweight title bout between Daniel Cormier and Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 220.
Cormier won that bout via second-round TKO, defending his title for the third time and cementing himself as a top-five ranked pound-for-pound talent.
The reigning champion, however, has decided to move back up to heavyweight to challenge Stipe Miocic in hopes of becoming a simultaneous two-division champ – a feat accomplished only by Irish sensation Conor McGregor, who captured the featherweight and lightweight world titles at UFC 194 and UFC 205.
That news didn’t sit well with Gustafsson, who dropped a split decision to Cormier in a back-and-forth brawl back in 2015.
Gustafsson, a former two-time title challenger, reacted to the news on Instagram and accused Cormier of running from a rematch with him.
“@dc_mma is fighting stipe?! Well stop run and fight me! Don’t even think about giving the fight to anyone else! I have been quite, had a tough time after my last fight (injury etc.) but I’m next in line and the dc fight is mine! Come on, let’s have a another dance for the fans! @ufc,” Gustafsson posted.
With Cormier expected to challenge Miocic for the heavyweight title at UFC 226 on July 7, Gustafsson, who is the top-ranked light heavyweight contender, will be forced to sit on the sidelines or accept a non-title fight against another top contender.
