HBO World Championship Boxing Kovalev vs. Pascal II airs live on HBO this Saturday, Jan. 30 with a fight time of 9:45 p.m. ET. This fight is a rematch from this past March – a fight Kovalev won via 8th round stoppage. Both fighters are 1-0 since. What started as a somewhat unnecessary rematch (the first encounter was a fun fight, but a pretty dominant Kovalev victory) has added some serious spark in recent weeks. Much of that is due to the accusations of racism being directed at Kovalev from Pascal. But for in-ring spark, there’s also the addition of legendary coach Freddie Roach to Pascal’s corner. Roach has been instrumental in some amazing careers in his time, and while Pascal remains the massive underdog, his involvement does add another dimension to the storyline. For Kovalev, a win here keeps his undefeated record intact and sets him up for possible big fights later this year with Adonis Stevenson and/or Andre Ward. Pascal tries to spoil those plans.
Opening the broadcast is Karim Mayfield vs. Dmitry Mikhaylenko in a Welterweight fight. Mayfield steps in on two weeks notice here, and he’s also making his return to the ring after a lengthy absence. In 2012, Mayfield was a hot rising talent, but he missed all of 2013, went 1-2 in 2014, and then missed all of 2015. His momentum is gone, and he looks to make a huge splash with a return win against the tough Russian fighter Mikhalyenko, who looked very impressive in his 8 round thrashing of Johan Perez last August.
