Reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, is used to spending fight week in the absence of his father, who typically struggles to obtain a visa for his flight to the United States.

But for the UFC 242 pay-per-view (PPV) event this Sat. (Sept. 7, 2019), which takes place inside The Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, Nurmagomedov Sr. is on location and helping coach Javier Mendez prepare “The Eagle” for his 155-pound title defense against newly-crowned interim champion, Dustin Poirier.

“Here with the great one, Khabib’s dad, it’s a great honor to be here with him and watch him teach his guys,” Mendez said on Episode 2 of the UFC 242 “Embedded” video blog. “He demands discipline, he demands loyalty and respect. I got in trouble too myself, so I know what it feels like. You don’t want to disappoint him!”
