Wow. That was a one-sided beating.
When Alexander Yakovlev decided to move back up to welterweight following an impressive victory over former number one lightweight contender Gray Maynard, many pundits openly wondered whether he could hang with the bigger and stronger boys at 170.
After all, Yakovlev had gone 0-2 at that weight prior to dropping to 155 pounds. But as it turns out, losing to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu wiz Demian Maia and formidable striker Nico Musoke was not a true reflection of the Russian’s talent.
Yakovlev owned nearly all of the four minutes of his UFC on FOX 18 prelims fight, punishing opponent George Sullivan on the feet, taking him down easily twice, before finishing him with a pretty combination.
The fight was nearing the four minute mark when Yakovlev threw a 1-2 combination with a left followed by a perfect right hook that sent Sullivan stumbling to the mat.
With the win, Yakovlev moves to 23-6-1 (2-2 UFC), while Sullivan drops to 17-5 (3-2 UFC).
