It was a fight designed to deliver a showcase knockout, but instead went the distance. We don’t think Tommy’s earning a fight with Jake Paul off that performance.
Tommy Fury had the deck stacked in his favor as much as is legally possible and still couldn’t land a knockout win on the Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley undercard.
That didn’t stop the “Love Island” reality show star from winning his fight with 7-5 mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Anthony Taylor via decision, going 40-36 on all three judges’ scorecards. Still, considering he was fighting someone who had never boxed professionally before (and regularly fights at 155 pounds — Fury fights at 180), the performance was a little bit lacking.
Taylor was game enough early on, throwing lunging overhand rights and trying to push Fury back. But Fury’s size and length advantage was simply too much for the non-boxer to overcome. As the fight went on, things devolved into a clinch up fest, with Taylor grabbing for Fury to stop his offense and holding on until the ref separated things.
This led to several moments where the crowd jeered and booed the fight.
When Showtime signed Tommy Fury, it was with the idea that Tyson Fury’s little half brother might be a good future opponent for Jake Paul. But, as it is with most of Jake Paul’s potential opponents, the less we see of them boxing, the better.
