Highlights! Hall Mounts Late Comeback, Drops Decision To Chavez Jr

Uriah Hall vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. squared off in a 200-pound contest earlier tonight (Sat. July 20, 2024) from Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida for the Jake Paul vs. Mike Perry-headlined “Fear No Man” boxing event, streaming on DAZN pay-per-view (PPV). After a competitive fight, Chavez Jr. was named the victor.

Chavez Jr. got off to a strong start. Though Hall was the man pressing, he didn’t throw a ton, mostly relying on single jabs. Chavez Jr., meanwhile, was more active with the jab, and he built off it too. He went to the body often, allowing him to come upstairs with the left hook. It landed a couple times well, and Chavez Jr. targeted the body too with power punches.

Hall responded to the difficult first round by upping the pressure and doing some work from the Southpaw stance. He still had a difficult time finding Chavez Jr., who kept his feet moving and occasionally stuck Hall with a looping swing or body jab. Hall did manage to score a bit in the latter half of the round, building longer combinations and finding better results.

Chavez Jr. continued to work well into the third, really out-landing Hall with jabs. There was an interesting exchange near the bell, however, as Hall really started biting down on his mouthpiece and brawling. He built on that success in the fourth despite some body shots, landing some close range combos as Chavez Jr. began to slow down a bit. He also grabbed a single-collar tie — not legal in boxing — and hit an uppercut or two, MMA style!

The fifth round was a major shift. Chavez Jr. was really slowing down, and Hall pushed his advantage. The two even threw down from close quarters, forehead-to-forehead. It made for an entertaining round, and the stakes felt higher heading into the sixth and final frame.

It was close. Chavez Jr. seemed to catch a second wind, moving more effectively and landing some good looping counters. Hall struggled in the first half of the sixth, but he stepped it up in the second half and found some success. In one instance, he clipped Chavez Jr. with a good left hook while his opponent was on the ropes.

All in all, this was a decent performance from Hall and underwhelming one from Chavez Jr. Hall didn’t look like a boxer, but he still managed to stay in a former champion’s face. Though Chavez Jr. won the fight, he didn’t land anything particularly damaging, got tired, and ended up with a bruised face.

That kind of performance isn’t going to score a showdown vs. Jake Paul.
