It’s a shame Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) only gives out four “Performance of the Night” awards per event, because there are going to be several unhappy athletes once the dust settles on “Fight Island” tonight (Weds., July 15, 2020) after UFC on ESPN 13.
Five of the first six bouts have come via stoppage, and Khamzat Chimaev definitely didn’t want to be left out of the fun. Chimaev came out aggressive, scoring an early takedown, and proceeding to deliver some punishment on John Phillips, busting up his face early to the point of bleeding. Smelling (and seeing) blood only prompted Chimaev to keep his foot on the gas pedal.
After a dominant first round, Chimaev scored an early takedown in round two, eventually getting into position to sink in a fight-ending d’arce choke. It was an impressive performance from the UFC newcomer, who remained undefeated (7-0, 1-0 UFC) in his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career.
