“Notorious” appeared to break his ankle and/or lower leg in a grotesque — and frustrating — stoppage loss.

Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor faced off earlier tonight (Sat., July 10, 2021) at UFC 264 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Following a strong first round from “The Diamond,” McGregor’s ankle suffered a serious injury at the end of the first round (details here).

Early on, though, McGregor looked sharp. He was landing heavy low kicks and his left hand connected, too. However, it didn’t take long for Poirier to earn his foe’s respect once more with his own heavy power shots. The fight changed dramatically when Poirier scored a takedown, opening up a painful salvo of elbows from the Louisiana native.

The immediate fallout from this unexpected outcome is unclear. Will there be a fourth bout as a result of the general strangeness? It’s certainly not impossible. At the same time, Poirier may be ready to move on and advance back to the official title mix.
