Holly Holm: Ignoring boos, sticking to gameplan key to KO win over Bethe Correia at UFC Singapore

Some fighters are easily persuaded by the non-stop boo birds to sway from their gameplans in the middle of a fight in order to make the bout as entertaining as possible for the fans in attendance.

Holly Holm is not one of those fighters.

Up until her devastating knockout over Bethe Correia in the main event of UFC Fight Night 111 Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore (relive it here), the combatants didn’t give fight fans in attendance much to cheer about.

Before “The Preacher’s Daughter” put the finishing touches on the Brazilian bomber, the fans showered the women with boos, though it didn’t affect Holly much.

“I wanted to pick a clean shot. I wanted to do it right and the game plan was not to rush anything,” Holm said during the post-fight presser via MMA Fighting. “We knew the crowd might boo because it’s the type of game plan that the crowd might boo and as soon as I heard that I thought, ‘I’m the one in here fighting, I’m gonna stick to the game plan and pick the right shot.’”

Indeed, the shot came in the third round moments after Correia taunted Holly to start engaging more. But, Holly won’t take all of the credit, as she says it was the fact that she listened to her coaches that made all of the difference in the fight.

“I wanted to pick the right kick at the right time and I wanted to listen to my team and what they were coaching me to do,” Holm said.

“They saw it open and they called it. That’s one of the things I wanted to do, listen to my team. I failed to do that my last two fights and it cost me the fights. I thought, ‘Tonight, I’m just listening to them. That’s what I’m gonna do. They’re watching it from the outside and I’ll listen to what they say,” she concluded.

The win snapped Holm’s three-fight losing skid and breathes new life into her combat career. Whether or not it was good enough for another title fight, remains to be seen.
