The UFC delivers two title fights today, each with an extremely international flavour. In the main event UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, a Nigerian and a Kiwi, will take on Cuban expat Yoel Romero. The co-main event features UFC strawweight champion Zhang Weili taking on former champion Joanna J?drzejczyk.
The main event sees Adesanya defend his undisputed UFC middleweight belt for the very first time. He won the interim title last April with a win over Kelvin Gastelum and then earned the proper belt by defeating Robert Whittaker by KO in Melbourne in October. Romero finds himself in a title fight despite losing his last two bouts. He dropped a decision to Paulo Costa in August and lost to Whittaker in 2018.
The co-main features another first defense with Zhang hoping to keep hold of the belt she won from Jessica Andrade — in stunning — fashion last August. Zhang’s title win was her 20th victory in a row. J?drzejczyk was the second person in the UFC to hold a strawweight title after she beat Carla Esparza back in 2015. She lost her crown to Rose Namajunas at UFC 217 in 2017. Since then she lost to Namajunas again and then lost to Valentina Shevchenko in the flyweight division. The Polish fighter dropped back down to 115 lbs last year when she beat Michelle Waterson.
The remainder of the pay-per-view features some fighters who are more or less well known. Before the title fights Beneil Dariush and Drakkar Klose will clash at lightweight. Before that there’s two welterweight bouts: Neil Magny vs. Li Jingliang and Alex Oliveira vs. Max Griffin.
The prelims, which are on ESPN tonight, are headlined by the returning Sean O’Malley. He fights Jose Quiñónez at 135 lbs. Also on the prelims are Mark Madsen vs. Austin Hubbard (lightweight), Rodolfo Vieira vs. Saparbek Safarov (middleweight) and Gerald Meerschaert vs. Deron Winn (middleweight).
The early prelims are on ESPN+ for folks in the US. They feature a catchweight bout between Emily Whitmire (who missed the strawweight weight allowance) and Polyana Viana. Rounding out the card are fights between Giga Chikadze and Jamall Emmers (featherweight) and Danaa Batgerel and Guido Cannetti (bantamweight).
