It wasn’t a good 40th birthday for Rafael Dos Anjos.
Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion Dos Anjos’ return to Welterweight did not go well at UFC 308 last weekend (Sat., Oct. 26, 2024). He suffered a knee injury in under two minutes against Geoff Neal and was stopped from inside Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Following the fight on Sat., Dos Anjos posted a statement on his social media.
“Thank you all fight fans for the support, sorry I let you guys down,” dos Anjos wrote on Instagram. “Definitely it was not how I want to celebrate my 40th birthday, it was a tough loss. During my whole UFC career it’s my second time been hospitalized after a fight, it make me feel blessed, it could been worse, it’s a tough game. Time to heal up, enjoy the family. I’m not done yet, I’ll be back soon. God bless you all. I’ll keep you guys updated on my stories.”
Dos Anjos turned 40 years old on Sat. and had to celebrate his birthday in a hospital room.
The Brazilian legend is on a three-fight losing streak and has lost four out of his last five fights. Dos Anjos has been jumping back and forth between Lightweight and Welterweight for the past seven years, but during UFC 308 media day, he said he will stay at 170 lbs for the final three fights of his UFC career. Unfortunately, he is 5-6 at Welterweight and hasn’t found much success, you know, other than challenging for the Interim Welterweight title against Colby Covington at UFC 225.
