McGregor needs 20 nominations from members of the Oireachtas to run for president of Ireland. He currently has zero, according to the Irish Sun.
Conor McGregor has hit an early stumbling block in his potential run for the Irish presidency.
McGregor has been all over the mainstream news in Ireland and Europe as he takes a political stance against the current Irish government over their handling of immigration and crime. In MMA, some bombastic comments set you up to make a couple extra million in pay-per-view sales. In Ireland, they get you investigated for ‘inciting hate’ after a night of riots in Dublin.
McGregor hasn’t let that deter him from hammering the current government administration and suggesting in a conversation with Elon Musk that he’d run for president.

“I’d fancy my chances Elon, 100%,” McGregor wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “I’d need to be nominated either by: at least 20 members of the Oireachtas; or at least four local authorities (AKA county councils) to run.”
Unfortunately for “The Notorious,” he’s not getting much support from the powers that be. According to The Irish Sun tabloid, no one is willing to nominate him.
“NO TD or Senator will back UFC fighter Conor McGregor’s bid to be President,” the Sun article read. “To stand, he needs to be nominated by four councils or 20 Oireachtas members, most likely Independents. But out of all 33 Independents, none who replied to our poll would back him.”

“One said ‘I wouldn’t nominate him to wash the dishes.”
Ouch.
How serious McGregor is about running for president remains to be seen, but he certainly has an uphill battle to make it onto the ballot. Maybe this will be like one of the many fight call outs he made while injured — today he’s spoiling for the booking, and next week it’s all forgotten.
Meanwhile, his anticipated UFC comeback opponent Michael Chandler continues to stay laser focused on training for their fight in early to mid 2024.
