Check out all the action from last night’s Invicta FC 24: Dudieva vs. Borella, including a few slick submission finishes.
Invicta FC 24: Dudieva vs. Borella is in the books, and it delivered a night of close contests and deep submission attempts. The main event saw former UFC fighter Milana Dudieva make her Invicta debut against the less heralded (but equally tenured) Mara Romero Borella in the flyweight division.
In the first round of their contest Dudieva looked the sharper fighter as she controlled the cage and pulled off a slick takedown. Borella looked game, though. The Italian winged heavy punches at the Russian before launching a takedown attempt of her own, which Dudieva countered with a guillotine that looked tight until both ladies hit the ground. In the second it was Borella’s turn to control the action. She bossed Dudieva in the clinch before executing a trip against the cage. After this Borella spent the rest of the round in top position, where she landed a couple of decent punches. It was anyone’s fight in the third. Borella quickly took Dudieva down at the beginning of the round, but the UFC veteran was very active off her back – throwing up submission attempts and hard punches. Borella weathered the storm and settled into side control where she landed some stiff elbows. Borella took full mount in the last minute, but was bucked off by Dudieva who managed to end up on top of the Italian, who then countered with a deep triangle-armbar combo, which she held until the final bell. The back and forth fight – in which Borella spent most time in top position – ended in a split decision victory for the Italian.
In the co-main, there was a likely title eliminator for the Invicta atomweight crown (currently worn by Ayaka Hamasaki) that pitted Jinh Yu Frey versus Ashley Cummins. The majority of the fight was spent with Frey on top of Cummins. However, ‘Smashley’ had Frey in trouble on a couple of occasions. Cummins attempted half a dozen armbars, two of which were extremely tight. Frey used spins and pure power to escape them, despite her arm looking bent out of shape. These attacks weren’t enough to turn the fight for Cummins, though. The judges all awarded the contest to Frey, who both dominated Cummins with her wrestling and landed the most meaningful blows of the fight (from ground-and-pound).
Elsewhere on the card, Pam ‘Bam’ Sorenson made short work of Helena Koselnyk. Sorenson took her Ukrainian opponent down quickly and landed some bombs from mount before transitioning to an armbar that grossly hyper-extended Koselnyk’s arm, and forced her to tap. Also of note was Sunna Davidsdottir, Miranda Maverick, and Felicia Spencer all remaining undefeated in their young careers (with Spencer winning via a first round submission).
