During a press conference, the South African athlete addressed the question of his sexuality. For Is Dricus Du Plessis Gay, he answered:
You are talking about me kissing other dudes? I have more photos. I have posted them online I don’t care. You think I care? I’m completely comfortable with my sexuality. Have you seen my girl? So I don’t care about that. I’m going to keep kissing my coach, kissing my dad, kissing my brothers… so what?
Later on, he added:
So where the big gay allegations came, me and this idiot, [were] in the speedos, [because] it was the Rugby World Cup in France. Every South African I know was like ‘That was the most hilarious thing’. They loved it. Not that gay is a bad thing. Me personally — just not gay.
Cameron Saaiman, another fighter from South Africa, says that kissing on the lips with other men is culturally quite normal. In an interview, he explained:
In African culture, that’s how we were brought up. Like, to greet your father or even your grandfather with a kiss… But I can imagine people watching the fight, knockout and then kissing your coach like what? Maybe it’s just not a big cultural thing in other countries.
This weekend at UFC 305, Dricus Du Plessis will look to defend his UFC middleweight crown against the former champion Israel Adesanya in a highly anticipated matchup. This will be the first defense of his throne since taking the title from Sean Strickland. The US-born Strickland captured the illustrious title by defeating ‘The Last Stylebender’ over five rounds.
