UFC light heavyweight Jimi Manuwa has some strong words for Daniel Cormier.
Jimi Manuwa has had a bone to pick with Daniel Cormier ever since the current light heavyweight champion laid into him at UFC 210.
Cormier, who defended his title against Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson at Buffalo New York’s KeyBank Center, targeted ‘Poster Boy’ in a WWE-style rant in the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan.
Since then, Manuwa has repeatedly dissed Cormier on social media and in interviews, and the No. 3 ranked contender really took it to the former Olympian in a recent interview with MMA-Panelen.
Manuwa didn’t like how Cormier dismissed him on The MMA Hour, telling Ariel Helwani that he has ‘no chance’ in a title fight. The heavy handed Brit responded by calling the current champ a ‘fat wrestler’ and a ‘bully’.
“F**k Daniel Cormier. He’s a f**king fat wrestler and I don’t really give a s**t what he says,” Manuwa said ahead of his fight against Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 214 (h/t Jed Meshew of MMA Fighting). “Everyone says he’s a nice guy but I don’t really like him. He seems to me like a bully and I don’t like bullies. He’s got the belt, he’s a great fighter and everything. I respect him for that but as a person I don’t really like him. I don’t like his attitude towards other fighters. He kind of looks down on people and stuff. So I don’t really respect him and I don’t believe he will get out of round two with me.”
Manuwa is preparing to fight Oezdemir at next Saturday’s pay-per-view, but the 37-year-old has opted to fill in as a replacement in case either Cormier or Jon Jones pull out of their headlining championship rematch.
Although he’s on standby and his opponent could change at the last minute, Manuwa says his full focus is on the Switzerland-born Oezdemir.
“It’s been said but my focus has been fully on Volkan Oezdemir. I’m so focused on him, I think about him every day. I think about him in training. I think about him when I’m tired. I’m fully focused on him. But to me, I don’t see names, I just see bodies. I’ve just got an opponent and I’m training for him. Whether it be Volkan Oezdemir, whether it be Daniel Cormier, whether it be Jon Jones, whoever. I’ve just got an opponent and I’m training for him. So it doesn’t really matter who I’m fighting.”
Manuwa vs. Oezdemir and Cormier vs. Jones are both booked for UFC 214. The blockbuster PPV takes place next week, July 29, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
