A scrap between entertaining lightweight veterans is the latest addition to UFC on FOX 16, as Joe Lauzon and former Pride champion Takanori Gomi have agreed to dance on the July 25 card. The UFC announced the bout Thursday on FOX Sports 1’s America’s Pregame show.
Lauzon (24-10) saw his two-fight win streak snapped with a second-round TKO loss to Al Iaquinta earlier this year at UFC 183. A veteran of TUF 5, the 30-year-old Lauzon is one of the longest tenured fighters in the 155-pound division and is the current all-time UFC bonus leader, having racked up 13 post-fight awards over 10 years of service.
He’ll now look to increase that mark against Gomi (35-10, 1 NC), a 36-year-old Pride legend who’s fought to mixed results since signing with the UFC in 2010.
While he carries an overall losing record inside the Octagon, Gomi is 3-2 over his last five fights, highlighted by decision wins over Mac Danzig and Isaac Vallie-Flagg. He suffered a first-round TKO loss to Myles Jury in his most recent outing last September.
Combined, Lauzon (18) and Gomi (9) have appeared in 27 UFC fights.
UFC on FOX 16 takes place at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw defends his belt in a rematch against Renan Barao in the night’s main event.
