Conor McGregor’s coach played a cruel, but predictable joke on his fans for April Fools Day.
April Fools is a cruel, cruel day. People think up the strangest pranks to play on each other, all in the name of fun. Sometimes it is indeed amusing, but a lot of the time it’s just an exercise in futility. So it should come as no surprise that when it comes to MMA, this day usually involves dream matches being “announced”, or top fighters saying they’re “retiring”, or something equally unlikely.
Enter John Kavanagh, the coach of Conor McGregor, who went for the low-hanging fruit with his April 1st tweet:
Finally the news is confirmed. Conor v Mayweather. Let’s do this!
— Coach Kavanagh (@John_Kavanagh) April 1, 2017
Obviously a few people bought it, as the tweet went viral and Kavanagh was trending in Ireland and the UK pretty quickly. Just so people knew it was clearly a joke, he went on to add another amusing tweet about the “fight”:
Slightly unusual rule set. Me and conor v him and his dad. Hell in a Cell, no holds barred. My prediction? PAIN.

STILL, people seemed to believe it, so he had to come clean a few hours later:
Did the tweet 5mins later about it been a nhb tag team hell in a cell match up not kinda give it away?? #aprilfoolsday

McGregor and Mayweather continue to negotiate the terms of the mega-bout.
