Even if Daniel Cormier can defeat Jon Jones at the upcoming UFC 197 pay-per-view (PPV) event, which takes place on April 23, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada (details), the soon-to-be 37-year-old Olympian is still tasked with turning away Father Time.
A fight we all lose, sooner or later.
That’s why American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) teammate Luke Rockhold is expecting to fill in for “DC” once the current light heavyweight champion rides off into the sunset. Sure, he still has some work to do at 185 pounds — like a Chris Weidman rematch — but it doesn’t sound like he’s overly-concerned with the challenges ahead.
From his conversation with The Independent:
“This time, it’s going to be even clearer. With a full camp with no infections, no illness I’m going to finish him quicker. Chris has nothing for me. He’s going down again either by knockout or TKO. I don’t mind which one, I’ll go in there and see what happens, but it’ll be an even easier night for me. I have a few guys left for me here and then we will see. I’ll handle the division here and then I’m always free to move up. I don’t think Cormier is going to be around forever and I’m a lot younger so there’s potential if he was to step down and step out then I would definitely move up and challenge.”
I could swear I’ve heard this somewhere before.
Rockhold is helping Cormier prepare for Jones — for the second time in his career — and understands what it means to be faced with “Bones.” Still, that hasn’t stopped the reigning middleweight champion from trying to do what Anderson Silva never could.
