UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones consulted a foot specialist on Wednesday to determine the severity of the foot injury he suffered midway through his classic title defense against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165.

“Just got back from a MRI,” Jones tweeted. “Great news! My foot is not broken or fractured. Focusing on a full recovery.”

Jones’ striking coach, Mike Winkeljohn, posted Sunday on Facebook that Jones “badly” injured his foot throwing a checked leg kick, and that it could be “possibly shattered.”

It’s Jones’ second foot injury in as many title fights, as the 26-year-old champion suffered a gruesome open fracture dislocation of his big toe during his victory over Chael Sonnen.

A timetable for Jones’ return as well as his next opponent is still up in the air.

UFC president Dana White initially appeared welcome to an immediate rematch between Jones and Gustfasson. Though at a Monday press event, White seemed to have cooled a bit on the idea.

“[The rematch] does and doesn’t (make sense), in the fact they’re both young guys,” White said.

“Jones won the fight. The judges made the right decision. It was a great fight, it was a close fight, it was a war, but the champion won. So maybe Glover (Teixeira) fights next. We don’t know, but I’m getting together with Lorenzo (Fertitta) on Wednesday, and we’re going to talk about it, see what we want to do.”
